Mount Fuji Day Trip from Tokyo: Climbing, Kawaguchiko & Views
Mount Fuji (富士山, 3,776m) — Japan's highest peak and most iconic image — is just 90-120 minutes from Tokyo by bus or train. Whether you're climbing the mountain, cruising the lakes, or simply standing at a viewpoint as Fuji floats above the clouds, this is one of Japan's unmissable experiences.
Getting There
Bus: Direct Keio Highway Bus from Shinjuku Bus Terminal to Kawaguchiko (¥1,800, 1h45m). Most convenient. Runs every 30-60 minutes.
Train: JR Tokaido Line to Mishima (bullet train) or ordinary train to Otsuki then Fujikyuko Line to Kawaguchiko (2.5-3 hours). Covered by JR Pass to Otsuki.
Best Viewing Spots
- Chureito Pagoda (Fujiyoshida) — the iconic five-storey pagoda with Fuji behind. 397 steps from the shrine below. Best in cherry blossom season and October.
- Lake Kawaguchiko — the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes. Northern shore: classic Fuji reflection in calm water.
- Oshino Hakkai — eight ponds fed by Fuji snowmelt, crystal-clear water with Fuji looming above.
