Tokyo in 3 Days: The Perfect Itinerary

Tokyo is simultaneously the world's most efficiently navigable megalopolis and its most bewildering — a city of 14 million people that somehow operates with the precision of a Swiss watch, where trains run to the second and convenience stores operate as lifestyle services. Three days here barely scratches the surface, but the visitor who approaches the city neighbourhood by neighbourhood — rather than bouncing between distant landmarks — will emerge with a genuine sense of how Tokyo works and why it has become the world's most admired urban model.

Day one: East Tokyo — begin at Senso-ji in Asakusa before the morning crowds arrive, walk the Nakamise shopping street, take the river taxi to Hamarikyū Gardens, then cross to Tsukiji outer market for a tuna bowl lunch. Spend the afternoon in Akihabara's electronics and anime culture before a sunset drink from the Tokyo Skytree observation deck. Day two: West Tokyo — Meiji Shrine at dawn, the backstreets of Harajuku, Omotesandō's architecture and fashion, Shibuya Crossing at rush hour (around 5-6pm) for the quintessential Tokyo moment, then dinner in Shimokitazawa's izakaya alleys. Day three: take the Chuo Line west to Shimokitazawa or southwest to Shimoda for a day trip, or spend the day exploring Yanaka cemetery and the preserved Edo-era streetscapes of old Tokyo before a final dinner in Shinjuku's Golden Gai.

The Suica card — loaded at any station kiosk — covers all Tokyo train and subway travel, including the Narita and Haneda airport links, and can be used as a contactless payment at convenience stores and most vending machines. Japan's convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson) are genuine food institutions — onigiri, soba, and hot prepared dishes available 24 hours for under ¥500. Budget ¥15,000–25,000 per day (approximately $100–170) for accommodation, transport, meals, and experiences.
