Tokyo Cherry Blossom 2025: Best Hanami Spots & Viewing Tips
Hanami (花見 — "flower viewing") is Japan's most beloved seasonal ritual, when the nation pauses to picnic under blooming sakura trees. Tokyo's cherry blossom season (late March to early April) transforms parks, riverbanks and temple grounds into pale-pink canopies — and draws visitors from around the world.
Best Hanami Spots in Tokyo
- Shinjuku Gyoen — the most famous hanami park, 1,100 cherry trees of 65 varieties (unusually long season: late March to mid-April). Entry ¥500. No alcohol allowed inside — a more serene picnic experience.
- Ueno Park — Tokyo's most lively (and rowdy) hanami. 1,200 trees along the central avenue; blue tarp picnic parties from dawn. Free entry. Best avoided on weekends if you want calm.
- Chidorigafuchi Moat — boat rental under cherry branches over the Imperial Palace moat. Possibly the most beautiful sight in Tokyo during peak bloom. Arrive before 8am on weekdays.
- Meguro River — a 4km stretch of river under interlocking sakura canopy, illuminated at night. The most photogenic in the city at dusk.
When to Go
Full bloom (満開 mankai) typically falls the last week of March to first week of April. Track forecasts at the Japan Meteorological Corporation bloom forecast site. Peak lasts only 5-7 days — plan flexibility into your trip.
