Koganei: Tokyo's Green Escape and Open-Air Museum

Koganei sits at the western edge of what most visitors consider Tokyo proper, served by the Chuo Line and the Seibu Tamagawa Line, and the journey itself signals the shift: the city gradually loses density, gardens appear between houses, and the air changes quality. Koganei Park is the centrepiece — 80 hectares of parkland on the banks of the Tamagawa josui canal, one of the largest municipal parks in Tokyo and, in cherry blossom season, one of the most spectacular. Over 1,900 cherry trees line the main avenues and scatter through the woodland, creating a canopy experience that feels genuinely forested rather than merely ornamental.

Within the park grounds, the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum preserves 30 historical buildings relocated from across the metropolitan area: farmhouses from Musashino, commercial buildings from Meiji-era Ginza, a Meiji bathhouse, and a military barracks converted to an arts studio. Studio Ghibli animators used the museum as reference material for the town in My Neighbor Totoro, and that connection is acknowledged in the museum's displays. The collection conveys what Tokyo actually looked like before successive waves of modernization — not a theme park version but a considered historical document in architectural form.

Koganei City itself rewards exploration beyond the park: the Tamagawa josui waterway, a 17th-century canal built to supply Edo with fresh water, runs through the city as a tree-lined walking path. Koganei's small commercial district holds good ramen, a respected local sake dealer, and weekend farmers' markets selling produce from the remaining agricultural plots of the Musashino plateau. For visitors staying multiple nights in Tokyo and seeking relief from the stimulation of central wards, Koganei offers the specific pleasure of a city that has not entirely forgotten what open space feels like.
